Poster Tales: In the late 1970s/early 1980s, I came in contact with a British poster collector named Nigel Mentzel. Nigel had placed ads selling posters in the back of music magazines, and that was how we got in touch with each other. Nigel sent me his catalogs of posters for sale as well as pictures of rare old Pink Floyd posters (I told him what I collected) along with comments about them. One of the pictures he sent me was of the poster for the Agincourt Ballroom, March 1967, with the notation "This is the only known copy of this piece still in existence." And to date, it is still the only copy of that poster I have ever seen. Over the years, we corresponded with each other and shared information about posters. Sadly, Nigel passed away in 2016.
Nigel's catalogs were one-sided black and white Xerox pages filled with pictures and listings of posters. The first couple of pages consisted of reproduction posters and posters that he had printed for sale (some of them are really great). But he would also include a section called "The Special List," which he put out once a year. This is the one that interested me the most as on it he listed "the rarest, most valuable and most beautiful pieces by the very best of the 60s/70's artists." Every time one of his catalogs would arrive in the mail, I would pour over it with eager anticipation.
Here is a sampling of one of his catalogs from the 1980s: Page one. Page two. The Special List-page 1. The Special List-page 2.
