The Black Magic Rock & Roll Festival was an actual event that was held at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan on October 31, 1969. This festival was poorly organized and numerous bands that were advertised on the poster were not even signed to appear. Big name artists, such as Pink Floyd (who were in England at the time) were never scheduled to appear. The promoter just fradulently put their names on the poster to lure people into buying tickets.
While the festival took place with local Michigan acts performing (see above), 14,000 fans were not happy that the artists they had paid to see were not there. To make matters worse, the stadium had only been leased until 1 a.m., at which time the power to the stage was turned off, right in the middle of Savage Grace's set. Both the Frost and the Amboy Dukes, who were scheduled to play after Savage Grace, couldn't perform. A riot ensued.
The bands that did not play, but were listed on the poster, were: Pink Floyd (was not there), Arthur Brown (was not there), Bonzo Dog Band (was not there), Kim Fowley (was not there), MC5 (was not there), Alice Cooper (was not there), Bob Seger System (was not there), All the Lonely People (was not there), Pleasure Seekers (was not there), Sky (was not there), Frost (did not play due to lack of power), and the Amboy Dukes (did not play due to lack of power). Timothy Leary also did not appear at the show.
