Problems with this poster include the use of the band member's faces on it, the misspelling of the band name Phydeaux Lime as "Phydeaux Line," the band Phaze listed as "The Phaze," and ticket agent John Conway Men's Fashion Shop listed on the poster as "John Conway, Men's Fashion Shop." Also, (next to Odeon Cinema) has been changed to grammatically incorrect "(next Odeon Cinema)." None of these errors appear on the handbill.
Poster Tales: I purchased my first Pink Floyd concert poster in 1968. Here's how it all started.
I grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, and in 1968 there was a thriving music scene happening in Michigan. We had music ballrooms downtown (the Grande Ballroom, and the Easttown Theater), and in Birmingham there was the Village Pub / Birmingham Palladium. I was fortunate in that Punch Andrews, who booked the Easttown Theater also booked the Village Pub, so many of the top acts that came through played locally in Birmingham as well.
I used to go to shows in Birmingham every weekend. As you entered the hall, there were handbills that you could pick up for upcoming shows. I collected these handbills for the local shows. Not long after the Village Pub opened, a headshop opened right next door. This headshop sold incense, pipes, beads, and, yes, posters for concerts, including ones from the west coast. They had an entire rack of Grande / Fillmore handbills for sale (I think they were 50 cents each) as well as full size posters on the walls. I was constantly adding to my collection of local posters/handbills by buying Grande and Fillmore posters/handbills every week. And one of the posters I bought in 1968 was a 1967 Pink Floyd poster from the Fillmore Auditorium. It was my first Pink Floyd poster.
Back in the 1960s, collecting posters was not anything like it is today. There were only a few places you could find them, namely in headshops and via mail order. I didn't order anything via mail order until the 1970s since I didn't know where to order from. But once I found out, I began ordering posters via mail order, and I started going to record shows where sometimes you would find posters if you were lucky.
I continued to attend concerts and collect posters and handbills throughout the years. And posters played a large part in my life. I had my own bands (Invinculis in the 1960s, and Terrain in the 1970s/1980s), and, yes, we had our own posters made for our shows. And my sister was a poster artist in Ann Arbor in the 1980s making posters for local shows. I love collecting posters and Pink Floyd posters are among my favorites.
