The First U.S. Tour
October-November 1967

After the release of their first album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn, on August 5, 1967, Pink Floyd’s managers, Peter Jenner and Andrew King, realized that a tour of the United States was a necessary step for the success of the band. Negotiations for a U.S. tour began in late September 1967, when Peter Jenner flew to New York to work out the details of the tour with the Richmond Organization, Pink Floyd’s publishers in the U.S. at the time.

Jenner’s initial plans called for a four-week U.S. tour, with two weeks of shows on the West Coast in San Francisco and Los Angeles, one week in Boston, a show in Chicago, and concluding with a few days in New York. General Artists Corporation was handling the bookings, and the first date of the tour was scheduled for the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, California on October 26, 1967.

During his trip to New York, Jenner also discussed plans for the release of Pink Floyd’s album in the U.S. with Hugh Dallas of Tower Records. Tower Records was a subsidiary of Capitol Records, the record label that would be handling all of Pink Floyd’s record releases in the U.S.

The band was scheduled to leave for the U.S. on October 21st to attend a release party for their album at the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles, California. Seeing as they would be in the States for the release party, Jenner also scheduled two additional concerts at the Whiskey on the 23rd and 24th of October. However, despite all the planning and bookings, the tour ran into trouble even before it began.

Pink Floyd’s managers failed to take into account the laws between the U.S. and Britain for having British citizens work in the United States. A work permit was required and had not been applied for. The tour had to be delayed until the permit could be acquired.

The release party for their album went ahead as planned on October 21st at the Whiskey A Go Go, but without the attendance of the band members, who were not allowed into the country yet. The album, which was renamed "Pink Floyd" for the U.S. market, was released with the songs on the album altered from the original British release to include the song See Emily Play, and dropping the songs Astronomy Domine, Flaming, and Bike from the record. The names of the songs Pow R. Toc H., and Take Up Thy Stethoscope & Walk were also misspelled on the record jacket. It was an ominous beginning.

Since the band was unable to get into the United States, all their shows in the U.S. through the end of October had to be cancelled. These cancellations had to be made despite the fact that tickets had been sold and posters had been made to promote the shows.

The first three shows at the Fillmore with Lee Michaels and Clearlight on October 26, 27, and 28 were hastily rebooked by Bill Graham, and Richie Havens filled in for Pink Floyd.

A KPFA radio show benefit that was to be held at the Fillmore on October 30th with Pink Floyd had to proceed without them.

Pink Floyd performances at Pacific West High School in San Jose, California, and three concerts at the Whiskey in Los Angeles were scrapped at the last minute.

Actual Pink Floyd Shows

Pink Floyd was finally allowed into the U.S. at the beginning of November, with their first full day in the country being Thursday, November 2nd. They had previously scheduled two days of concerts at the Fillmore in San Francisco on November 2nd and 3rd, and a Saturday performance at Winterland in San Francisco on November 4th. However, they did not play the Thursday night appearance due to issues relating to their light show. They had brought Peter Wynne Wilson, their lighting man, along for the tour, but their lighting equipment wasn’t functioning properly. Joshua Lights, a San Francisco lighting company, ended up doing the lights for the shows. Their first performance in the U.S. took place on Friday, November 3rd at the Winterland Auditorium in San Francisco, California, and is represented by this poster by artist, Bonnie MacLean.

On Saturday, November 4th, the band was flown in the morning from San Francisco to Los Angeles to appear on the U.S television show, American Bandstand with Dick Clark. It was on this show, which was not broadcast until December 16, 1967, that they mimed to Apples and Oranges and spoke with Dick Clark about the tour. It is apparent from the American Bandstand video that Syd Barrett was not doing very well. He was lackluster in his miming to the song Apples and Oranges, although he does respond to the interview questions from Dick Clark with intelligence.

After the American Bandstand appearance, the band was flown back to San Francisco for their show at Winterland that night, before flying back to Los Angeles the following day for an appearance on the Pat Boone television show. The Pat Boone Show proved that Barrett was in a bad state. When Pat Boone attempted to talk to Barrett live on the air, Barrett responded with a blank stare. He would not respond to Boone’s questions. As a result of this appearance, tour manager Andrew King quickly cancelled other scheduled television appearances on such shows as Boss City and Groovy. However, despite the cancellation of their TV appearances, Pink Floyd continued making their scheduled live performances.

The night of the Pat Boone Show found them performing at the Cheetah Club in Santa Monica, California with Smokestack Lightning and The Candymen.

It was at the show at the Cheetah Club, in Santa Monica that the Alice Cooper band, who were living in a house in Venice, California, met the Pink Floyd and invited them to stay with them at their house for the reminder of the tour. Reports of the Pink Floyd’s stay with the Alice Cooper Band are sketchy, although Glen Buxton, the guitarist with the Alice Cooper Band at the time, stated in an interview for Trouser Press magazine that he couldn’t remember Syd Barrett ever saying two words. Buxton explained, “He never talked, but we’d be sitting at dinner and all of a sudden I’d pick up the sugar and pass it to him, and he’d shake his head like ‘Yeah, thanks.’ It was like I heard him say ‘Pass the sugar.’ It’s like telepathy, it really was. It was very weird. You would find yourself right in the middle of doing something, as you were passing the sugar or whatever, and you’d think ‘Well, damn, I didn’t hear anybody say anything!’ That was the first time in my life I’d ever met anybody that could actually do that freely. And this guy did it all the time.” Buxton also gave some insight into the state of Syd Barrett during the tour. He said, “The crew used to say he was impossible on the road. They’d fly a thousand miles, get to the gig, he’d get up on stage and wouldn’t have a guitar. He would do things like leave all his money in his clothes in the hotel room, or on the plane. Sometimes, they’d have to fly back and pick up his guitar. I didn’t pick up that he was a drug casualty, although there were lots at the time who would do those exact things because they were drugged out. But Syd was definitely from Mars or something.”

During their second week in the U.S., Pink Floyd took Monday through Wednesday off from performing, although some A & R men from Capitol Records gave the band a sightseeing tour of Hollywood. Pink Floyd resumed their scheduled concerts at the Fillmore on Thursday, November 9th, and at Winterland on Friday and Saturday, November 10th and 11.
