[U.K. Manufacturing Information]
  1. Bar Codes: Bar codes are a group of vertical lines found on the back cover of some CDs that are used for scanning purposes. By passing a CD with a bar code over a scanner, the scanner can read information about the CD instantly. The information in bar codes begins with the vendor code (first 4 digits), the catalog number, a format code ("1" for LPs, "2" for CDs, "4" for cassette tapes), and sometimes there is a final digit that is the barcode checksum. In recent years, there has been a trend towards using the entire bar code number as the catalog number of the CD.

  2. Compact Disc Pressing History (EMI Records):

    1. 1982-1985 (Japan & West Germany) - When the compact disc was first introduced, there were no CD pressing plants in the U.K. During these early years, Pink Floyd CDs that were sold in Great Britain were pressed either in Japan or in West Germany, and imported for sale in Great Britain.
    2. 1985-1987 (Nimbus, U.K.) - Nimbus Records opened the first U.K. compact disc mastering and pressing plant in Monmouth, England in August 1984. The first Pink Floyd "Made in the U.K. " CDs were pressed at this plant in apx. 1985/1986. The U.K. CD pressing plant at Monmouth was closed on October 23, 1987 although Nimbus Records continued to press CDs elsewhere.
    3. 1987-2002 (EMI Swindon, U.K.) - EMI Records opened its first CD manufacturing plant in the U.K. (at its VHD facility, a former videodisc facility) in Greenbridge, Swindon, England, on May 15, 1986. The first compact disc order produced at the plant in May of 1986 was a batch of Dark Side of the Moon CDs.
      1. Swindon CD Manufaturing:
        1. Initial Training - When Swindon first opened in 1986, several engineers from the Toshiba-EMI Gotemba plant in Japan came to Swindon for a period of three months to provide in-house training in all aspects of CD manufacture. Takeshi Komiyama, who is the current plant manager at the Gotemba Plant in Japan, provided training to Alan Bateman on disc production. Keiji Kakinuma, who was one of EMI-Toshiba's chemical engineers, also provided training on vacuum evaporation and protective film coating.
        2. Mastering & Personnel - In 1986, Swindon had three people in the mastering department mastering their compact discs, namely Brian Ball, Andy Ball, and Keith Fish. They all had prior experience in digital mastering as they had been producing masters for VHD (Video High Density) discs prior to mastering CDs. As production at Swindon increased to 24/7, Ian Trew and Dave Hayes were the "Technical Co-ordinators of the Mastering Department," right through until the end of production in 2002.
        3. Production Runs - The number of CDs that were pressed for each different matrix varied from plant to plant, and from run to run. At the Swindon pressing facility, to assure that quality CDs were produced, the disc HF signals were checked from disc samples as each order was manufactured. Any errors that were found outside the Philips red book specification would result in the replacement of the stamper immediately. Since the information structure on the stamper was extremely fragile and susceptible to all kinds of contamination either on its surface or beneath it, it was fairly common for a stamper to be contaminated or scratched during a production run. However, the number of discs produced from each stamper at Swindon could easily exceed 100,000 CDs for a clean run.
        4. Stamping Time - When Swindon first started manufacturing compact discs in 1986, the cycle time to produce one polycarbonate disc was 15.0 seconds. Current manufacturing now produces one CD in apx. 2.3 seconds. As the cycle time became faster and faster, the mastering process had to be changed in order to produce stampers with a pit formation that would produce acceptable HF signals for a given cycle time and moulding parameter. Therefore, pit geometry became a variable at the laser beam recording (LBR) stage onto the glass master.
EMI closed its CD manufacturing plant in Swindon, England in May 2002, and switched its CD manufacturing for Europe to its Uden, Netherlands plant. The very last order of CDs produced at the Swindon plant was a couple of hundred copies of the Dark Side of the Moon CD.
    4. 2002 (Uden, Netherlands) - In 2002, EMI began manufacturing all its CDs for the European market, including all U.K. releases, at its plant in Uden, Netherlands.
    5. 2004 (MediaMotion, Netherlands) - In March 2004, MediaMotion, a member of the Dutch ECF Group, purchased EMI's Uden manufacturing facility and entered into a long term agreement to exclusively manufacture all of EMI's CDs for the European market.
    6. 2007 - EMI was purchased by Terra Firma.

  3. Label Codes: Label codes are the 4 digit numbers that are found on the labels of some CDs. These label codes are designated by the IFPI to indicate the company that owns the rights to the property on the CD. Some of the relevant registered label codes are:
    1. LC 0148 - Capitol Records
    2. LC 0149 - CBS Records
    3. LC 0162 - Columbia Records
    4. LC 0542 - EMI Records
    5. LC 1305 - Harvest Records
    6. LC 1331 - EMIDisc Records

  4. Matrix Information: Matrix information is the letters and numbers printed on a compact disc in the mirror band near the center hole of a compact disc. (matrix information may be read either from the top side, or label side, of a CD, or from the bottom side of the CD). The matrix information tells alot about the pressing history of the particular CD. The following matrix information can be found on many U.K. compact discs:

    1. Catalog number - the identifying number given to the release by the record company.
    2. Manufacturer's Work Order Number - This often is in the form of a bar code.
    3. Mastering Information - On some CDs there are three numbers separated by dashes, such as 2-2-1 (or @13:7:3). These numbers refer to the father, the mother, and the stamper. For the example 2-2-1, the first 2 indicates that the CD was made from the second father, the second 2 indicates that the CD was made from the second mother made from the second father, and the third number, 1, means that the CD was made using the first stamper made from the second mother (The stamper is what is installed in the mold machine).
In some instances, if an order was short or to make up a shortfall, a father may have been used as the stamper (the father, like a stamper, is a negative impression of the glass master). If this was the case, the matrix would read something like @5 + +, which would indicate that the 5th father was used as the stamper. However, this was not common as it was more cost effective to have a father, a mother, and a stamper, as stampers were cheaper to produce than metal fathers.
    4. Pressing Plant - Pressing plant information is often found in the matrix. For example, the words "EMI SWINDON" in a matrix indicate that the CD was mastered and pressed at the Swindon CD pressing plant in Greenbridge.
    5. Selection Source Master - On some CDs, the selection source master is designated by information such as RE2. In the example given, RE2 indicates that the selection source master is at revision level 2.
    6. SID Codes - On many CDs, there are two Source Identification Codes (SID Code) in the matrix band. The SID Code, which was introduced in April 1994, consists of the letters IFPI (which stands for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), followed by 4 or 5 additional characters. There are two different SID Codes found on CDs:
      1. Mastering Code - The first SID Code in the matrix band is the "Mastering Code." The Mastering Code begins with "IFPI" followed by a sequence of digits beginning with the letter L, followed by two numbers that indicate the pressing plant, and then 1 or 2 additional digits that indicate the Laser Beam Recorder (LBR) that cut the glass master. The Mastering Code is put on the CD at the time the glass master of the CD is cut by the LBR, and it appears on all subsequent pressings of the CD sourced from that specific glass master.
      2. Mould Code - The second Sid Code on a CD is the "Mould Code." The Mould Code begins with "ifpi" followed by two digits that indicate the specific pressing plant that pressed the disc, and two or three additional digits that indicate the unique mould or stamper that pressed the CD.
        SID Mould Codes include:
        1. 14 - EMI Records pressing plant, Greenbridge, Swindon, England
        2. 15 - EMI Compact Disc BV pressing plant, Uden, Netherlands
        3. 45 - Sony Records pressing plant, Japan
        4. AAH - MediaMotion Manufacturing BV, Uden, Netherlands

Note: The matrix information listed in this discography is not intended to be complete listings. This is known matrix information only. Matrix information from multiple copies of the same issue is listed where known.

  5. Total Time: The total time for each CD is provided in minutes and seconds. Total time readings can vary by a second or two depending on the CD player or software program used to do the readings.

  6. Track Peak Levels: The peak volume levels for each song on a particular CD isue have been noted in this discography. These peak volume levels are measured as percentages, with the maximum possible peak level being 100%. CDs that have differing peak levels from one issue to the next reveal that the CDs were made from different masters.

  7. TTR: At the very end of the album Dark Side of the Moon, a very, very short and quiet snippet of a portion of the Beatles song, Ticket to Ride, can be heard. It is believed that this is on the master tape. When the first compact discs were made, this snippet was cut off. In this discography, this is indicated by "No TTR" in the mastering section of the entry.

If it begins to drive you really crazy, then separate the outer slipcase from the book, leave the book in your CD collection, andput the slip case in your car or potting shed where it might look and act like a burglar alarm. The battery for the Led should last more than six months and is replaceable, if you can get to it, that is without trashing the case. The battery must not, of course, be exposed to fire or high temperatures which can cause cells to leak or explode. The LED is set at the average human pulse speed so it can be used as an anti stress device - just check your own pulse against it. It is designed primarily for easy finding thereby avoiding uncomfortable neck twisting or eye squinting to read the spine. The LED is also like the opening heartbeat of The Dark Side of the Moon. Most particularly the LED pulses . . . it is a live phenomenon . . . like the music."
